I've discussed the whole web2.0 thing at length with colleagues and friends - hell I've even bitched and moaned about it in this very blog. O'Reily, the crowd who coined the term, go into some depth with their "What is Web2.0" article. I've shunned the approach on account of the added complexity (it can be a throwback to the bad old "two sites for the price of one" days, one for netscape / one for Internet explorer), falling back on the progressive enhancement ideal that has kept me fed for the past three years.
But, seeing I've activated Sheep mode I guess it's time to give into the dark side. I'll keep you posted!Update...
I've sat down and played with the various approaches for an hour or so, with some success, but a few issues above raise their heads time and time again. I have no intention of going back to the bad old days, but with a little backpage magic and progressive enhancement ideal I think we could create a winner here...The plan...
Backpage stores it's documents as an xHTML fragment, the original idea being to keep everything in a predictable, extensible format - so when the next web / mobile / syndication / whatever format is landed in our lap we don't have to sweat... too much. It also doesn't store DTD or other header information, meaning that the content extracted could be included into an existing web-page without undue burden. So a touch of ajax passing a few parameters to a script that extracts the requested information from the db to re-present it in any given design template minus the ole page refresh should do the trick, removing the 'make that page twice' burden and satisfy the search engines, web2.0 pundits and just about everyone else, while ensuring web monkeys like me still make cash.
And here we are - WebTooPintOh this page!
Oh yeah - the design is a standard 2.0: bright colours, roundy corners and a stupid name - cheers web20generator.com!
ToDo!
- Update the Uri rewriter to cater for offsite links, it only handles blog posts and some of the regular pages.
- Change the design - cheers web20design.com
- Other stuff ...
