Hurt them properly: Giveth... then taketh away
I'd started to pen this post in praise of Meteor, that poor, much maligned, Irish mobile phone company. I'd bitched a number of times in the past on how'd they'd treated a simple customer request for an improvement of service and on how meteor then released the hounds (or, as ENN so perfected framed it: Meteor hits customer).
But on some level they did in-fact listen, and eventually acted. An updated UI to their web SMS service did eventually appear. The plan was to assign credit where it was almost richly due.

Delighted to see the following SMS land:
You have received your monthly free call credit. The amount of Euro 20.00 will be credited to your account. Free credit is issued on the 10th of the month. Meteor
€20 free credit? Sweet! A new sms ui AND additional credit - kinda makes one feel good to be a meteor customer!
1 hour 44 minutes later
Meteor had a system issue which applied incorrect call cr this am. Ur account has been adjusted and correct free credit of E3.00 applied. Sorry Meteor
Nothing is worse than something given, then, without warning, taken away.
Don't pity your fools
Of course there's no recourse. System issues happen. All the time. It's how they are treated that influences how we, the customer base, responds. In this case the issue was internal and unfortunate, but rather than taking what had already been given, Meteor could have used this as a case to ingratiate their customers, admitting their mistake, but allowing the (relatively meager amount of) credit to be retained.
They could even take credit for it:
Meteor had a system issue which applied incorrect call cr this am. Our bad - enjoy =)
After all, free credit burns out VERY quickly, and creates goodwill which ... well... is nice!
This post exposes the following:
- I spend very little on mobile phones
- I hate being teased
- I appreciate the complexity of running automated billing systems
- I'd like to see meteor do well by their customers
- My beautiful grammar nazi HATES the usage of 'Ur' in sms messages... regardless of source!
