I have to admit I never saw this one coming! Google, the "don't be evil" company with the 'innocent' 2038 cookie and happy fun aid for Us.gov following  9/11 is shrinking from disclosing aggregate data to the US Justice Department. The Justice Department wants Google to turn over records on millions of searches to bring into effect a law that could help shield kids from pRon. Google is shrinking from the order claiming the request would identify users (oh that cookie!), expose trade secrets (... page rank and those other '99' factors that determines a site's ranking), and impose an undue burden on the company (several sql coders and a coffee machine!).

To Google's credit, the same request went out to AOL, MSN, and Yahoo - all of whom have complied. But those companies are not top dog at the moment, google is! If google were to comply with this it will creates a precedent. Sure, this time it's aggregate data to help structure laws to protect children online (this is a barrel of fish on its own - don't even get me started!), but what about the next time? Google has long being working toward a system "That Knows You". If google does yield to the Justice Department it doesn't take a massive leap of imagination to picture information on a specific individual being requested by X, Y, Z law enforcement agency further down the line. This very idea could really hurt google!

Should the greater trust be lost in google, if people begin to shy away from the search engine for fear of their browsing habits being recorded and possibly used against them at a later date, regardless of its index size or search relevance, Google could quiet possibly become the next Altavista...
